The state government’s recent decision to include Marathas in the OBC (Other Backward Classes) reservation quota has caused a rift within the ruling alliance. Two ministers, Chhagan Bhujbal from the NCP and Narayan Rane from the BJP, strongly oppose this move, labeling it as “unjust” and a violation of the rights of OBCs (Other Backward Classes).
Damage Control Efforts by Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis
In an attempt to manage the situation, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured on Monday that the BJP would prevent any injustice to OBCs. He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting OBC interests and mentioned discussions with senior leaders in Delhi if necessary.
OBC Leaders Increase Pressure
OBC leaders have intensified their efforts in response to the government’s decision. Following a meeting, Bhujbal expressed concerns that the decision would end reservations for existing OBC castes. OBC outfits have announced a statewide protest yatra, with leader Shabbir Ansari highlighting worries about political reservations being affected.
Rane Opposes Decision, Cites Encroachment on OBC Rights
Minister Narayan Rane, a Maratha himself, opposed the decision, stating that it would encroach upon the rights of OBCs. He expressed concerns about the potential suppression of Marathas and the reduction of OBC reservations by at least three percent. Despite canceling a scheduled press conference, Rane emphasized the importance of caste, religion, and country over any political post.
Controversial Notification and Ongoing Disagreements
The controversial notification, issued on January 26, aims to facilitate Kunbi certificates for Marathas. This has caused distress among OBCs, who fear a significant increase in Kunbi certificates. OBC outfits have announced a Maharashtra yatra to unite OBC communities and encourage objections to the draft notification. Despite attempts by ruling alliance leaders to defend the decision, differences within the alliance persist.
